Jeju-do to Open Sports Human Rights Center for the Disabled This Month
Disabled Sports Development Forum to Operate the Center by Consignment
Jeju Special Self-Governing Province will open the 'Jeju Disabled Sports Human Rights Center' in March to protect and promote the human rights of athletes with disabilities in Jeju and provide related human rights services.
The Jeju Disabled Sports Human Rights Center is a facility established and operated in accordance with the 'Jeju Special Self-Governing Province Disabled Sports Human Rights Ordinance' enacted in March last year. It will function as an effective human rights protection institution, independent from the local sports community.
To select an organization to operate the Human Rights Center, the province held a public recruitment in December last year. After review by the selection committee, the Disabled Sports Development Forum was finally chosen and is scheduled to sign a private consignment agreement.
The Human Rights Center will be responsible for receiving reports of human rights violations against athletes with disabilities, protecting victims, conducting human rights surveys, providing counseling, and carrying out projects to promote the rights of disabled athletes.
Kim Yangbo, Director of the Culture, Sports and Education Bureau, said, "Although awareness of sports activities for people with disabilities is improving, many still face various difficulties in participating in sports. We hope that through the operation of the center, all people with disabilities will be able to enjoy sports activities equally and have their rights guaranteed."
