Economist Poll Shows 70% of Americans
Worry "Tariff Increases Will Lead to Higher Prices"
As U.S. President Donald Trump has launched an all-out tariff war, a poll released on the 13th (local time) showed growing concerns among Americans about the state of their domestic economy.
According to a poll conducted by the economic weekly The Economist and the polling agency YouGov from the 9th to the 11th, surveying 1,699 adults across the United States and released on the same day (margin of error ±3.2%P), nearly half of the respondents, 48%, said the U.S. economy is deteriorating. Only 19% evaluated the economy as improving, while 26% said it was about the same.
When asked whether they think the U.S. is currently in a recession, 37% answered "yes." Those who answered "no" were fewer, at 32%. Regarding who is responsible for the current economic situation, 44% pointed to President Trump, while 34% identified former President Joe Biden. As for President Trump's economic policies, 47% opposed them, while 43% supported them.
When respondents were asked about tariffs, an overwhelming majority of 70% believed that if tariffs increase, consumer prices would also rise. Regarding the 25% tariff imposed on Mexico, 51% opposed it, and 34% supported it. For tariffs on Canada, 54% opposed and 31% supported.
Favorability toward President Trump was slightly more negative (50%) than positive (47%), within the margin of error. Regarding Elon Musk, Tesla CEO and head of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), who played a major role in Trump’s second-term administration, more respondents said they had an unfavorable view (53%) than a favorable one (41%).

Meanwhile, in a poll conducted by Quinnipiac University from the 6th to the 10th surveying 1,198 people and released on the same day (margin of error ±2.8%P), 54% of respondents said they do not support President Trump’s economic policies. Those who said they support them accounted for 41%.
