New Senior Centers and Cultural Spaces to Open Soon
Gangdong-gu, Seoul (Mayor Lee Soo-hee) announced on the 13th that it will significantly expand senior welfare infrastructure, including the establishment of new senior centers and securing spaces for senior cultural and digital education.
The district received a budget of 3.617 billion KRW from the Seoul Metropolitan Government to build the ‘Seongnae Buntogol Senior Center,’ which will open next month. The name originates from the area’s historical abundance of white soil resembling white clay, hence called ‘Buntogol.’

The first floor houses a program room, while the second and third floors are designated as grandmother’s and grandfather’s rooms, respectively. The fourth floor features a rooftop garden where seniors can comfortably enjoy their leisure time.
Mayor Lee Soo-hee visited the construction site on the 12th, just before completion, carefully inspecting detailed facilities such as movement paths and restroom handles.
Additionally, the district is creating the ‘Gangdong Senior Culture Center’ by utilizing the donation facility at Olympic Park Foreon to promote leisure activities and social participation for the new senior generation. Opening in June this year, the center will offer physical activity programs such as health dance and senior ballet to support seniors’ healthy and vibrant lives. It will also provide hobby and leisure opportunities like barista experiences, cooking classes, and handicraft workshops, along with job counseling and promotional programs to help expand seniors’ social roles.
Furthermore, Gangdong-gu was finally selected in the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s competition to host the ‘Seoul Digital Donghaeng Plaza’ and is currently conducting the design competition for the Southeast Center of the plaza. The Seoul Digital Donghaeng Plaza Southeast Center, which will operate as a digital consultation, education, and experience space, is scheduled to open in October on the fourth floor of the Cheonho 3-dong Public Complex Building.
In the future, residents will be able to freely enjoy leisure and hobby activities using the latest digital technologies at this location. The district plans to collaborate with the 50 Plus Center, Gangdong Senior Club, Single-Person Household Support Center, and Health 100-Year Counseling Center to provide various customized support services.
