This year's by-elections had raised the possibility that, if the Constitutional Court announced its decision on President Yoon's impeachment before the candidate registration date of the 13th, an early presidential election could be held simultaneously with the presidential election in May.
According to the Jeonnam Election Commission, candidate registration for the April 2nd by-elections will take place over two days, on the 13th and 14th. In the Jeonnam region, the April 2nd by-elections will include the Damyang County Governor and basic council member elections in three areas: Gwangyang, Damyang, and Goheung.
In the Damyang County Governor by-election, a two-way race is expected between Lee Jaejong (former Blue House administrator), a preliminary candidate from the Democratic Party, and Jeong Cheolwon (Chairman of Damyang County Council), a preliminary candidate from the Cho Kuk Innovation Party.
For the basic council elections, in Gwangyang District D (Jungma-dong), the race is set to include Democratic Party preliminary candidate Lee Donkyun (former head of the Democratic Party's regional civil affairs office), Progressive Party preliminary candidate Lim Giju (former head of organization at the Jeonnam branch of the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions), and Liberty Unification Party preliminary candidate Park Jongyeol (former public official).
In Damyang District R (Goseo, Gasamunhak, Changpyeong, and Daedeok-myeon), so far, Democratic Party preliminary candidate Noh Daehyun (executive committee member of the Damyang regional committee) is likely to run unopposed. In Goheung District N (Gwayok, Namyang, Donggang, and Daeseo-myeon), Democratic Party preliminary candidate Kim Donggwi (former chair of the Jeonnam Democratic Party's special committee on residents' autonomy) and independent candidate Kim Jaeyeol (former member of Goheung County Council) are expected to run.
Meanwhile, the official campaign period will begin on the 20th, with early voting on the 28th and 29th, followed by the main vote on the 2nd of next month.
