Gwangju City Expects Wise Decision from City Council on Urban Planning Ordinance
Statement Issued by Spokesperson
"Request for Prompt Vote"
On the 12th, Gwangju City stated, "We expect a wise decision from the Gwangju City Council regarding the amendment to the urban planning ordinance that raises the residential floor area ratio in central commercial areas."
On this day, the city, through a statement issued by its spokesperson, requested, "In order to prevent confusion among local residents and citizens, we hope for a prompt vote on the ordinance amendment that has been resubmitted for reconsideration."
The city also added, "We will seek ways to revitalize central commercial areas through sufficient communication with the city council," and continued, "We will discuss with the council measures to prevent social waste caused by urban hollowing-out, long-term unsold commercial spaces, and vacancies, as well as ways to enhance land efficiency."
Meanwhile, the 'urban planning ordinance amendment' that Gwangju City has requested for reconsideration mainly aims to ease the residential floor area ratio in central commercial areas from 400% to 540%.
The city, the city council, and urban planning experts held a public debate on the 'urban planning ordinance amendment' through a live TV broadcast on the 11th. During the debate, Gwangju City expressed concerns that the amendment could lead to increased social costs due to side effects such as the deterioration of the residential environment and the worsening of unsold apartment issues. The city also emphasized that easing the residential floor area ratio is not timely, given the current accumulation of unsold apartments.
