SM Kukil Jeji, a Specialty Paper Manufacturer, Plans to Establish Integrated Plant in Gumi National Industrial Complex... Purchases 13,000 Pyeong Site for 20 Billion Won
Memorandum of Understanding Signed with North Gyeongsang Province and Gumi City
Plans to Relocate Asan and Yongin Plants
On the 12th, North Gyeongsang Province and the city of Gumi signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd., a company specializing in special and industrial paper manufacturing, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Seoul to promote the establishment of an integrated factory in Gumi.
The event was attended by Yang Geumhee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs, Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, and Kang Taehyun, CEO of SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd.
SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd., an affiliate of the SM Group, possesses the technological capability to produce ultra-thin paper (used in bibles, dictionaries, etc.), which requires a high level of technical proficiency in wet-based papermaking. The company leads the domestic special paper market by producing various high-performance specialty papers tailored to customer needs.
SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd. has adopted sustainable management as its core strategy. In response to the loss of competitiveness at its Asan plant due to low-priced imports, the company plans to cease industrial paper production at Asan and focus on producing and processing high-performance specialty papers at its Yongin plant.
As a foundation for this plan, the company will purchase a 13,000-pyeong factory site in the Gumi National Industrial Complex for 20 billion KRW, relocating the Asan and Yongin plants to establish an integrated factory. Additionally, it has laid the groundwork for the mid- to long-term growth of its subsidiary, Kukil Graphene, and will continue to invest over the next four years.
Kim Jangho, Mayor of Gumi, said, "I am very pleased to sign the first business agreement of 2025 with SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd., a leading company in the paper industry. The relocation of SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd.'s headquarters to Gumi is expected to greatly contribute to revitalizing the local economy and creating jobs. We will spare no effort to provide the best possible environment for companies to invest and grow in the future."
Yang Geumhee, Vice Governor for Economic Affairs of North Gyeongsang Province, stated, "The establishment of SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd.'s integrated factory in Gumi is expected to significantly contribute to the revitalization of North Gyeongsang's economy and the creation of quality jobs. North Gyeongsang Province will provide administrative and financial support to ensure that companies can settle and grow stably."
Vice Governor Yang also added, "We look forward to investments in advanced new materials by Kukil Graphene, a subsidiary of SM Kukil Jeji Co., Ltd., and we will continue to create the optimal environment for North Gyeongsang Province to lead future advanced industries."
