Chong Kun Dang currently co-markets Kerendia (active ingredient finerenone), a treatment for chronic kidney disease accompanied by type 2 diabetes, with Bayer Korea. It also holds Nesvel (active ingredient darbepoetin alfa), an anemia treatment for patients with end-stage kidney disease. The CKD campaign utilized Chong Kun Dang’s English initials CKD and the abbreviation for chronic kidney disease CKD (Chronic Kidney Disease) under the slogan "Care for yourself, Keep going, Don’t give up." The campaign slogan encourages diabetic patients to regularly undergo kidney tests to take care of their kidney health themselves and to start timely treatment without stopping or giving up once diagnosed with chronic kidney disease.
The CKD campaign involved medical professionals nationwide and Chong Kun Dang employees, who held boards bearing the CKD campaign message and took photos to raise awareness about the importance of early diagnosis of chronic kidney disease in diabetic patients and to convey support to the patients.
In South Korea, type 2 diabetes accounts for about half of the causes of end-stage kidney disease requiring renal replacement therapies such as dialysis and transplantation, and the incidence of kidney disease is expected to continue rising with the increase in diabetic patients. However, chronic kidney disease often shows no severe symptoms until it has significantly progressed, making it difficult for patients to recognize. Therefore, diabetic patients should regularly check both glomerular filtration rate, which evaluates kidney function, and albuminuria, which detects kidney damage, to maintain kidney health.
Once diagnosed with chronic kidney disease, it is important to slow the progression to end-stage kidney disease through appropriate treatment. Treatment for diabetic kidney disease has recently become more proactive with the emergence of new therapeutic options that inhibit kidney inflammation and fibrosis. Proper dietary management is also crucial for patients with diabetic kidney disease. Since diabetes and kidney disease require different dietary precautions, patients should be mindful, and those with impaired kidney function should avoid foods high in potassium, such as certain vegetables and seaweed.
