Buan County Selected for National Theater Regional Cultural Hub Performance Contest
Hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Theater of Korea
Secured 43 million KRW in national funding
Buan County in North Jeolla Province has been finally selected for the '2025 National Theater Regional Cultural Hub Performance Contest Project' hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the National Theater of Korea.
According to the county on the 4th, the Cultural and Sports Facility Office secured approximately 43 million KRW in national funding and succeeded in attracting the National Gugak Orchestra's representative performance, 'NOK Cinema.'
The National Theater Regional Cultural Hub Performance Project is a program that presents outstanding repertoire works by the National Theater's resident troupes (National Changgeuk Company, National Dance Company, National Gugak Orchestra) at regional performance venues. The aim is to vitalize local cultural spaces and provide high-quality performances to Buan residents.
In this contest, Buan Arts Center achieved a remarkable feat by attracting the National Gugak Orchestra performance, which had the fiercest competition among the three resident troupes of the National Theater.
'NOK Cinema' is an innovative performance that combines gugak orchestra music with film scores, creating a new type of stage where traditional Korean instruments and video are harmonized. This performance will reinterpret and present famous songs from classic films such as the Charlie Chaplin series, Roman Holiday, and Breakfast at Tiffany's in the style of gugak.
A representative from Buan Arts Center said, "By hosting this performance, we plan to provide a unique experience distinct from traditional gugak performances," adding, "We expect to play a central role in the development of Buan's local culture and arts, and to continue cultural exchanges through ongoing collaboration with the National Theater."
