The Gwangju Institute of Health and Environment monitored the causative pathogens in patients with acute diarrhea who visited 10 local medical institutions. As a result, the detection rate of norovirus, which was 35.6% (31 out of 87 cases) in December last year, surged to 53.2% (109 out of 205 cases) last month and 67.0% (77 out of 115 cases) in February.
Norovirus is a highly contagious virus that can be easily transmitted through consumption of contaminated food or contact with infected individuals. It is one of the pathogens that can cause group outbreaks of diarrhea in environments such as daycare centers and kindergartens where people live together in groups.
After being infected with norovirus, symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea typically appear within 1 to 2 days. These symptoms usually resolve on their own within 2 to 3 days, but infants, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems should be especially cautious, as dehydration alone can pose serious risks.
Jung Hyuncheol, Director of the Institute of Health and Environment, stated, "Even a small amount of norovirus can be easily transmitted, so it is important to strictly follow personal hygiene guidelines," and urged, "Please practice proper handwashing and thorough food hygiene management at home and in schools."
