Jo Incheol Holds 'Policy Forum' Ahead of AI Basic Act Implementation
Expectations for Developing Policy Directions for the Advancement of the AI Industry
Democratic Party lawmaker Cho Incheol (Gwangju Seo-gu Gap) announced on the 25th that he will hold a forum on "Discussion of Current Issues in the AI Basic Act" at the National Assembly’s 2nd Small Conference Room on the 26th.
The forum has been organized to bring together industry and government officials ahead of the implementation of the AI Basic Act, in order to discuss the impact the legislation will have on the domestic AI industry and its future development direction.
In a press release distributed in advance, Cho stated, "AI is a general-purpose technology that will be applied across all aspects of daily life, much like electricity or the steam engine. If Korea fails to take the lead, it will fall behind in this era of change. With the enactment of the AI Basic Act, we have laid the foundation for systematic development of the AI industry and the establishment of a national-level governance system. The government and industry must work closely together to strengthen effective policy support."
He continued, "The National Assembly will continue to provide a policy foundation so that the AI industry can be competitive in the global market and will support innovation in the private sector. I hope this forum will serve as an opportunity to diagnose practical challenges in the AI industry and to specify legal and institutional support measures."
Regarding follow-up legislative plans, he explained, "We will further review detailed support bills for fostering the AI industry and will prepare practical policies through communication with the industry."
At the forum, Lee Sangwook, a professor at Hanyang University, will give a presentation on "The AI Basic Act Where Innovation and Safety Coexist." This will be followed by discussions with Gong Jin-ho, Director at the Ministry of Science and ICT; Kim Minjun, CEO of Langcode; Park Sunjae, Head of the LawForm AI Center; and Shin Sangryeol, Director at the National Artificial Intelligence Committee, who will discuss effective implementation measures for the AI Basic Act and institutional support plans for industrial development.
The panel discussion will feature in-depth talks on legal challenges and regulatory easing during the technology development and application process for companies following the implementation of the AI Basic Act, national support policies for fostering the AI industry, and solutions for AI ethics and safety issues. Industry panelists will share the real-world problems faced by AI startups and large enterprises in applying the AI Basic Act and will propose directions for improvement at the government and National Assembly levels.
Cho stated, "I hope that this forum will lead to the development of concrete policy directions for the effective implementation of the AI Basic Act and the advancement of the AI industry."
