The 3rd Haerum Alliance regional 6-university R&D joint research project is led by POSTECH and will be conducted over three years from this year until 2028. Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power and three local governments will jointly invest 6.6 billion KRW (6 billion KRW from Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power, 300 million KRW from Ulsan City, 150 million KRW from Pohang City, and 150 million KRW from Gyeongju City) in the project.

The Nuclear Innovation Center will be established within POSTECH, the lead university, and the six regional base universities participating in the Haerum Alliance agreement will build a cooperative system to conduct joint research in a total of 33 fields, including regional industrial cooperation, future energy technology, and humanities and social convergence.

Notably, among the 3rd phase research projects, the proposal titled “Development of Power Technology and Market Analysis for Activating Carbon-Free Distributed Energy in Pohang City” by Professor Kim Young-jin of POSTECH was selected.

This research project will proceed with ▲establishing measures to meet power demand in industrial complexes (1st year) ▲optimal design and impact analysis of carbon-free distributed energy-based power grids (2nd year) ▲analysis of changes in sales prices of carbon-free distributed energy sources due to power market system improvements and establishment of Pohang City’s response measures (3rd year). Pohang City plans to address regional energy-related issues based on the results derived from this research.

Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “We will spare no support to establish a cooperative relationship among Haerum Alliance local governments, universities, and Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power to produce research results that contribute to the development of the Pohang region.”
