Since 2005, Dangjin Steelworks has been running blood donation campaigns in cooperation with the Daejeon Sejong Chungnam Blood Center of the Korean Red Cross, encouraging voluntary participation from employees to promote a culture of sharing life.
The winter season is a period of chronic blood shortages due to seasonal factors such as cold waves and heavy snow, as well as a decrease in student participation in blood donation during winter vacation.
To address these blood supply challenges, Hyundai Steel is operating blood donation buses at six locations within the steelworks over two days as part of the campaign.
To establish a culture of blood donation within the company, participants in the campaign receive commemorative gifts, and the campaign will be held quarterly, four times a year.
Last year, Hyundai Steel donated 1,004 employee blood donation certificates collected from its various business sites to the Korea Childhood Leukemia Foundation.
Among these, Dangjin Steelworks contributed 334 certificates to support cancer treatment. The certificates will be used to help pediatric cancer patients from vulnerable groups who face difficulties in securing blood supplies.
Over the past 21 years, a total of 13,470 employees at Dangjin Steelworks have participated in the ongoing blood donation campaign, and last year, 1,092 employees donated blood, resulting in the donation of 380 certificates.
A Hyundai Steel representative stated, "Blood donation is a representative volunteer activity that anyone can easily participate in to share life," and added, "We hope to deliver hope to neighbors in need of help due to blood shortages."
Meanwhile, in 2019, Dangjin Steelworks became the first single company in the Daejeon, Sejong, and Chungnam regions to surpass a cumulative total of 10,000 blood donors, earning recognition for its contribution to stabilizing the local blood supply and receiving a commendation from the Governor of Chungnam in the medical and pharmaceutical fields.
