Hong Ilsung, President of the Jeonnam Tourism Association, and representatives from the local travel industry stated that the promotional marketing support of up to 3 million won and the tourism promotion fund loan program provided by Jeonnam Province after the Jeju Air passenger plane accident were somewhat helpful.
However, they emphasized that it is now essential to provide loss compensation support specifically for travel agencies that suffered direct damages (such as commission losses) due to travel product cancellations.
In response, Jeonnam Province explained that it has been continuously submitting proposals to the National Assembly, the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to include the basis for loss compensation support for affected businesses in the "12.29 Passenger Plane Accident Special Act."
Additionally, as measures to revitalize local tourism, Jeonnam Province is consulting with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to include the following in the government’s supplementary budget: ▲support for local travel agency liability insurance premiums ▲local accommodation discount coupons ▲incentives for the development and operation of excellent travel products ▲promotion of local tourism products through online travel agencies (OTA).
Jeonnam Province plans to share the progress made so far and future key initiatives for revitalizing local tourism, and to materialize new projects that reflect on-site feedback, securing financial resources through the government’s supplementary budget.
The province also requested the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism to hold a large-scale K-pop concert to coincide with the reopening of Muan International Airport, aiming to heal local residents and boost tourism vitality.
With Yeosu City being selected for the Ministry’s “2025 Large-Scale Hallyu Comprehensive Event” and other major events such as the National Sports for All Festival, Jeonnam International Ink Biennale, and Namdo International Gastronomy Industry Expo already planned, expectations are high for a recovery in local tourism demand.
Yoo Hyeonho, Director of Tourism and Sports at Jeonnam Province, said, "Travel demand is expected to partially recover in earnest from the flower blooming season in March," and added, "We will host large-scale events during the travel season and prepare measures to revitalize the local tourism industry and boost tourism in Jeonnam."
