Discussion on Defense and Defense Industry Cooperation with Cameroon
Acting Minister of National Defense Kim Seon-ho held talks with the Minister of National Defense of Cameroon and signed the first defense cooperation agreement with an African country.
According to the Ministry of National Defense on the 19th, Acting Minister Kim held a meeting with Joseph Beti Assomo, Minister of National Defense of Cameroon, at the Ministry of National Defense in Seoul in the afternoon, discussing ways to strengthen defense and defense industry cooperation between the two countries.
At the meeting, Acting Minister Kim highly evaluated that Cameroon is a key partner in Central Africa for South Korea, and that the two countries have developed cooperative relations in various fields such as economy, development cooperation, agriculture, and health, especially in light of the 2024 Korea-Africa Summit.
In particular, regarding the establishment of the Embassy of Cameroon in Korea, he expressed hope that defense cooperation between the two countries would be further strengthened through the dispatch of military attach?s, and requested Minister Beti Assomo's interest.
They also shared a consensus on the importance of unity and clear response from the international community to North Korea's ongoing nuclear and missile provocations, and discussed ways to expand defense cooperation, cooperation on the international stage, and regional security situations.
During this meeting, the two countries signed a defense cooperation agreement, the first with an African country, to establish an institutional foundation that can elevate defense cooperation to the next level. Acting Minister Kim explained the strong will of the Ministry of National Defense to build a closer defense cooperation relationship with Cameroon under the vision of a ‘global pivotal state,’ and agreed to expand cooperation into various fields starting with human network exchanges such as military education and training.

Additionally, Acting Minister Kim explained South Korea’s excellent defense industry and weapon systems, including light tactical vehicles and Surion helicopters, and agreed to seek ways to expand defense industry cooperation, including the defense information modernization project, to strengthen Cameroon’s defense capabilities contributing to peace and security in the African region.
