According to Jeonnam Province on the 18th, medical support led by Jeonnam Province and Muan County Health Center, in cooperation with the Jeonnam Medical Association, Korean Medicine Association, and Pharmaceutical Association, was operated for nearly 50 days. The total number of participants, including medical staff, amounted to 1,522.
This medical support team provided medical consultations and medication guidance to bereaved families suffering from stress-related illnesses such as fainting, insomnia, and headaches. Comprehensive medical support, which included not only physical treatment but also mental recovery, was provided to 8,465 people.
Twenty-four emergency patients were promptly transferred and treated at Mokpo Korea Hospital and Muan General Hospital via 119 ambulances. Among the medical services, general medicine accounted for 2,214 people, medication guidance for 1,983, Korean medicine treatment for 799, and psychological counseling for 3,469. For bereaved families suffering from psychological distress, the team collaborated with the National Trauma Center and regional Mental Health Welfare Centers to provide in-depth psychological counseling and treatment.
Notably, this medical support effort saw medical professionals and organizations from across the country voluntarily participate, demonstrating the spirit of mutual assistance during difficult times. The Jeonnam Medical Association, Korean Medicine Association, and Pharmaceutical Association dispatched 192 medical professionals for 24-hour volunteer service. The Seoul Pharmaceutical Association and Jeonnam Pharmaceutical Association donated medicines worth 12 million KRW and 35 million KRW, respectively, while the Korea Herbal Medicine Association provided herbal medicines worth 10 million KRW.
A doctor who participated in the on-site medical support said, "When a mother who received treatment thanked us with tears in her eyes, my heart ached and my eyes welled up. Although it was a small help, I did my best, hoping it would ease the pain of the bereaved families, even a little."
Although the official medical support ended on the 15th, Jeonnam Province plans to continue supporting the bereaved families so they can return to their daily lives.
Kim Younrok, Governor of Jeonnam Province, emphasized, "To help all residents of the province overcome the pain caused by this disaster together with the bereaved families, we are operating a one-on-one dedicated public official system. We will continue to stand by the bereaved families to ensure they receive sufficient treatment and tailored psychological programs."
