Human Rights Commission Distributes Decision Document Stating "Yoon's Right to Defense in Impeachment Trial Must Be Guaranteed"
The National Human Rights Commission stated on the 17th that President Yoon Seok-yeol's right to defense in impeachment trials and criminal trials must be guaranteed.
On the same day, the Commission released a decision document titled 'Recommendations and Opinions on Measures to Prevent Human Rights Violations Related to the National Crisis Caused by the Declaration of Martial Law.'
As a measure to prevent human rights violations against President Yoon, the Commission expressed the opinion that it is necessary to comply with due process, such as conducting strict evidence investigations equivalent to criminal proceedings during the presidential impeachment trial by the Chief Justice of the Constitutional Court.
It also expressed the opinion that the Seoul Central District Court and the Central Regional Military Court should keep in mind the principle of non-detention trial, a fundamental principle of criminal law, regarding President Yoon and other defendants related to the declaration of martial law.
