KIPO Expands Scope of K-Intellectual Property Education
The International Intellectual Property Training Institute (Training Institute) of the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO) is expanding its scope in response to the growing foreign demand for K-Intellectual Property education.
On the 16th, the Training Institute announced the establishment of the "2025 Intellectual Property Education Plan for Foreigners," which outlines these details.
According to the education plan, the Training Institute will increase the number of courses from 13 last year to 16 this year (10 online courses and 6 face-to-face courses), and the number of foreign students will be increased from 472 to 700.
Furthermore, the institute explained that it aims to strengthen the quality of K-Intellectual Property education for foreigners by enhancing participatory education such as practical discussions and field learning.

In particular, last year, it held "Intellectual Property Leadership Education for Women Scientists" for 22 recipients of the UNESCO-L'Or?al Women in Science Awards. This course was co-hosted with WIPO and was the first of its kind conducted in Korea.
Additionally, responding to requests from government officials (38 people) from three Asian countries?Indonesia, Malaysia, and Thailand?the institute conducted an "Online Joint Practical Training on Design Examination for Three Countries," demonstrating its commitment to foreign intellectual property education.
This year, KIPO plans to conduct surveys on intellectual property education demand targeting overseas patent offices and educational institutions (in February and November) to provide broad opportunities for foreigners to participate in K-Intellectual Property education. Participatory education opportunities such as practical exercises, discussions, and company site visits will be offered to foreign participants.
The institute also plans to upload videos of the courses on the KIPO Academy website to facilitate the spread of K-Intellectual Property education through online channels.
Heo Jae-woo, head of the Training Institute, said, "We will strive to sustain the administrative Korean Wave of 'K-Intellectual Property' in the field of intellectual property education. To this end, we will strengthen cooperation with international organizations such as WIPO and foreign patent offices, while actively developing high-quality global intellectual property education content."
Meanwhile, the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) officially designated the Training Institute as an "Intellectual Property Education Institution" in 2006. Since its designation, the institute has operated various educational programs, including annual summer schools for foreigners from around the world.
