This initiative aims to attract new residents to Jeollanam-do's fishing villages, which are losing vitality due to population decline and aging, while offering urban residents the opportunity to start a successful second life in these communities.
The '2025 Urban Residents Settlement Support Project' will support urban residents wishing to move to fishing villages in Jeollanam-do, beginning from the stage of expressing intent to settle, and proceeding through four phases: preparation, implementation, and settlement.
During the intention phase, promotional campaigns about returning to fishing villages and rural areas will be conducted, mainly in the Seoul metropolitan area and major cities, to spark urban residents' interest in Jeollanam-do's fishing villages and promote local living conditions.
Cases of 'outstanding returnees' who have successfully settled in Jeollanam-do's fishing villages will also be shared.
In the preparation phase, the Jeonnam Return to Fishing Villages Small Expo will be held for urban residents interested in settling in Jeollanam-do, providing opportunities to meet with outstanding local fishing village associations and receive consultations on relocation.
Heads of fishing village associations, women's associations, and youth associations?who are usually difficult to meet directly?will explain membership requirements, available vacant houses, job opportunities, and discuss settlement possibilities with prospective residents.
During the implementation phase, the 'Jeonnam Fishing Village Exploration Life (2 nights, 3 days)' program will allow urban residents who participated in the Small Expo to visit the fishing village they wish to reside in, experiencing actual fishing activities and community life.
Customized education will also be provided to prevent participants from abandoning their relocation midway.
In the settlement phase, the 'Urban Residents Become Jeonnam Fishermen (2-week stay)' program will support long-term settlement and daily life, helping participants begin actual preparations for relocation. Support will also be provided for remodeling vacant houses, securing land for new homes, and community activities to resolve conflicts with local residents.
Park Geunsik, head of the Maritime and Port Division of Jeollanam-do, said, "Jeollanam-do's fishing villages, with their abundant marine resources and pristine natural environment, will be a great opportunity for urban residents seeking new challenges."
Meanwhile, urban residents wishing to move to fishing villages in Jeollanam-do can contact the Jeonnam Return to Fishing Villages Support Center or visit the official website for more information.
