Joined the Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition
First in Gyeongbuk to Join, Expanding Environmental Network and Taking Proactive Action in the Era of Climate Crisis
Pohang City is expanding its environmental network by becoming the first in Gyeongbuk to join the Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition.
On the 6th, the city attended the regular general meeting of the ‘2025 Local Government Council for Climate Crisis Response and Energy Transition’ held at Take Hotel Gwangmyeong.
At the general meeting, 10 local government heads and deputy heads attended, including Mayor Lee Kang-deok of Pohang, who newly joined the council, Mayor Park Seung-won of Gwangmyeong, Mayor Lee Jae-jun of Suwon, District Chief Oh Seung-rok of Nowon, and County Governor Jeon Jin-seon of Yangpyeong.
The meeting began with congratulatory remarks from Choi Jae-cheol, Chairman of the Climate Change Center, followed by a keynote speech by Lee Yoo-jin, Director of the Green Transition Research Institute, on the topic of ‘The Role and Tasks of Korean Basic Local Governments in Climate Response.’ The council then resolved key projects to be promoted this year and the election of executives.
The council pursues bottom-up changes to achieve common goals regarding climate change and energy policies and currently includes 29 basic local governments.
In Gyeongbuk Province, Pohang City became the first to join the council on this day, and moving forward, Pohang plans to actively work as a key executive to expand the environmental network.
Additionally, the city plans to collaborate and jointly respond with local governments within the council for ▲ joint research and institutional improvements for energy policy transition ▲ discovery of renewable energy expansion projects ▲ climate crisis response ▲ greenhouse gas reduction.
Mayor Lee Kang-deok stated, “For the sustainability of solving the climate crisis, it is time for local governments to independently develop policies and take roles in responding to the climate crisis,” adding, “We will expand the network to build a carbon-neutral society and actively engage in activities.”

Pohang City plans to continue its swift actions to take the lead in environmental issues in the era of the climate crisis by hosting the international environmental forum ‘World Green Growth Forum’ in May, announcing a carbon-neutral practice vision, appointing Pohang Environmental Ambassadors, and holding the S.I.W, a subsidiary meeting of the United Nations Climate Change Global Innovation Hub (UGIH).
