Gyeonggi-do to Provide 172.5 Billion KRW Support to Single-Parent Families This Year
Gyeonggi Province will invest a total of 172.5 billion KRW this year to support single-parent families in the province.
On the 3rd, Gyeonggi Province announced that it has allocated a total of 172.5 billion KRW, including 124.7 billion KRW in national funds, 20.5 billion KRW in provincial funds, and 27.3 billion KRW in city and county funds, to support single-parent families with child-rearing expenses, school supplies, youth single-parent self-reliance support, and welfare facility operations.
First, Gyeonggi Province will continue the "Single-Parent Child-Rearing Expense Support Project" this year, following last year. This project is characterized by raising the income eligibility standard to 100% of the median income (3.93 million KRW per month for a two-person household) so that single-parent families exceeding the government’s recognized income standard can also benefit. A monthly payment of 100,000 KRW per child is provided until the child turns 18. The project coverage area has expanded from 8 cities and counties in the province last year to 12 this year.
Gyeonggi Province will also significantly increase welfare benefits and support for low-income single-parent families (63% or less of the median income, 2.47 million KRW per month for a two-person household). In particular, child-rearing expenses, which were 210,000 KRW per month for children under 18, will be raised by 20,000 KRW to 230,000 KRW, and additional child-rearing expenses will be provided for children under 5 years old. Furthermore, the support for school supplies will be expanded to elementary school students, providing 93,000 KRW annually for children in elementary, middle, and high school. The cost of daily necessities, paid twice a year during Lunar New Year and Chuseok, will increase by 10,000 KRW from 50,000 KRW to 60,000 KRW per household.
For youth single-parent families (65% or less of the median income, 2.55 million KRW per month for a two-person household), child-rearing expenses will be 400,000 KRW per month for children under 2 years old, and for children over 2 years old, the amount will increase by 20,000 KRW from 350,000 KRW to 370,000 KRW per month. The youth single-parent family support project will also be expanded through various self-reliance support programs such as self-reliance promotion allowances and learning support.
Gyeonggi Province operates counseling and information services, parent education, and self-help groups for single-parent families, and strengthens support for pregnant women in crisis through local counseling centers. Pregnant women in crisis who face difficulties with childbirth and child-rearing receive 24-hour counseling and other support. This year, Gyeonggi Province plans to further strengthen the support system for single-parent families by adding a counseling center for pregnant women in crisis in the northern region.
In particular, Gyeonggi Province will provide housing for single-parent families without homes and with incomes below 100% of the median income, preparing 30 units including 10 in Suwon and 20 in Ansan, with support for up to 6 years.
Additionally, the budget for operating welfare facilities for single-parent families will be increased, and comprehensive support such as psychological counseling, medical support, and childcare services will be provided to residents in welfare facilities.
