114 Flights to Jeju Delayed Due to Heavy Snow During Lunar New Year Holiday... Passenger Ships Also Restricted
On the 27th, during the Lunar New Year holiday, heavy snowfall occurred nationwide, causing some flights departing from Jeju to be canceled and over 100 flights to be delayed.
According to Korea Airports Corporation Jeju Airport and Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration, as of 6 p.m. that day, five departing flights were canceled, including one to Gimpo, two to Wonju, and two to Yeosu, along with five arriving flights. A total of 114 round-trip flights were delayed.
With a heavy snow warning issued for the mountainous areas of Jeju, heavy snowfall led to a complete suspension of vehicle traffic on the 1100 Road and 516 Road, which are the Halla Mountain cross roads connecting Jeju City and Seogwipo City, and the snow flower bus service was also halted.
All five Halla Mountain climbing courses, as well as the Eoseungsaengak Trail and Seokgulam Trail, were fully closed.
The recent 24-hour snowfall accumulation in the mountainous areas was 37.8 cm at Eorimok, 35.8 cm at Samgakbong, 35 cm at Sajebi, 25.5 cm at Yeongsil, 17.2 cm at Seongpanak, 6.3 cm at Sancheondan, and 2.6 cm at Saebyeol Oreum.
With a high wave warning issued for the seas around Jeju, the Songnim Blue Ocean ferry on the Jeju?Chuja?Wando route, the Santa Monica ferry on the Jeju?Jindo route, and the Silver Cloud ferry on the Jeju?Wando route were canceled.
Additionally, passenger ferry operations on the routes to Marado and Gapado, the southernmost islands of the country, were also suspended. The Jeju Regional Meteorological Administration forecasted that from tonight until the morning of the 29th, heavy snow would fall intermittently at a rate of 1 to 3 cm per hour in the mid-mountain and higher mountainous areas, and snow accumulation is expected along coastal areas, possibly leading to the issuance of a heavy snow advisory.

They also warned that heavy snowfall could cause the collapse of weak structures such as livestock barns and vinyl greenhouses, or vehicle entrapment, urging special caution. Due to the heavy snow potentially disrupting flight operations, passengers are advised to check flight information in advance.
