KakaoPay Securities Highlights Diverging Strategies and Results
According to an analysis of user investment performance by KakaoPay Securities last year, 72% of investors in U.S. stocks made a profit. In contrast, only 48% of those who invested in domestic stocks saw gains.
On January 23, KakaoPay Securities published its "2024 Investment Report," which analyzed its customers' trading activities. According to the report, investors using KakaoPay Securities last year-commonly referred to as Donghak Ants (domestic stock investors) and Seohak Ants (overseas stock investors)-saw sharply different results. In terms of average returns, the U.S. market delivered a 5% return, outperforming the Korean market, which posted a 0% return. Furthermore, the proportion of investors achieving returns of over 10% was 32% in the U.S. market, far surpassing the 13% recorded in the Korean market.
The three most actively traded stocks among Seohak Ants were Nvidia, Tesla, and the SOXL exchange-traded fund (ETF). Notably, 80% of Nvidia traders made a profit, with the maximum realized return reaching an impressive 958%, making it the top pick. In the Korean market, Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and Yuhan Corporation were the most frequently traded stocks.
As a result, the threshold to enter the top 10% in terms of returns was higher in the U.S. market. Achieving a 12.4% return was sufficient to be in the top 10% in the Korean market, but in the U.S. market, investors needed to exceed 33.7% to reach the same percentile.
