Kim Dong-yeon "Now We Must Also End the 87 System and Launch the 7th Republic"
Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, argued that it is now time for our politics to also dismantle the '87 system' and launch the Seventh Republic.
The 87 system refers to the political, economic, and social system in South Korea that was formed around the constitutional amendment for direct presidential elections, which was achieved through the June 1987 Democracy Movement and the June 29 Declaration.
On the 13th, at a ‘2025 New Year Press Conference’ held at a restaurant in Suwon, Governor Kim emphasized, "With the current political system, there are inevitably many obstacles for the Republic of Korea to follow its proper path," and added, "I believe we need to launch the Seventh Republic."
He continued, "Previously, as a presidential candidate, I called for political change and advocated for a constitutional amendment centered on a decentralized four-year renewable presidential system and a responsible prime minister system," and said, "At that time, I also reached an agreement while unifying with candidate Lee Jae-myung."

In particular, he stated, "The biggest problem in our politics is the concentration of political power and the drawbacks of the two major parties," adding, "They fight fiercely but have maintained a hostile symbiotic relationship until now. However, the worst aspects of the 87 system are now becoming prominent. It is time to launch the Seventh Republic. For this, a constitutional amendment is necessary."
