Busan Gijang-gun Proves to Be a Safe City in Ministry of the Interior and Safety's 'National Local Government Regional Safety Index Evaluation'
First Grade in 4 of 6 Categories, Average Safety Grade 1.83
Highest Score Among Busan Districts, Top 1% Nationwide at County Level
Busan Gijang-gun (Governor Jeong Jong-bok) was recently recognized as one of the safest cities nationwide by achieving excellent results in the '2024 National Local Government Regional Safety Index Evaluation.'
The Regional Safety Index evaluation is conducted annually since 2015 by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety. It analyzes statistical data across six areas: fire, traffic accidents, crime, daily safety, suicide, and infectious diseases, assigning safety grades from 1 to 5 for each local government.
In this evaluation, Gijang-gun received a grade 1 in four of the six categories (traffic, fire, daily safety, infectious diseases) and a grade 2 in one category (suicide). Notably, the fire and infectious disease categories each improved by one grade compared to the previous year, resulting in an average safety grade of 1.83. Additionally, the traffic and daily safety categories, which are closely related to residents' daily lives, maintained a grade 1 for six consecutive years.
This is the highest grade among the 16 districts and counties of Busan City and places Gijang-gun in the top 1% among 82 county-level local governments nationwide.
The county attributes these visible achievements to continuous efforts for regional safety, including improvements to CCTV, security lighting, and traffic safety facilities, built upon active interest and participation from local residents and a close cooperative network with related organizations, private groups, and volunteers through various communication channels.
To achieve grade 1 in all categories, Gijang-gun plans to implement diverse safety-related policies such as ▲improvement projects for child and elderly protection zones ▲sidewalk construction projects for pedestrian safety ▲distribution of residential fire safety equipment for vulnerable groups ▲operation of forest fire surveillance personnel and special firefighting teams ▲expansion of crime prevention CCTV ▲promotion of safety culture campaigns ▲suicide prevention projects including life guardian training ▲and expanded support for influenza and national essential vaccinations.
Governor Jeong Jong-bok stated, “We will continue to maintain the highest level of regional safety by persistently implementing improvement projects in vulnerable areas through close collaboration with related organizations such as the police and fire departments. In particular, we will focus administrative efforts on establishing a proactive disaster prevention and response system to achieve zero casualties.”
