Closing Ceremony of 75th Anniversary of North Korea-China Diplomatic Relations Canceled... China States "Maintaining Friendly Relations"
In 2024, North Korea and China planned to hold a commemorative ceremony and closing ceremony for the Year of Friendship between the two countries, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations. However, it is reported that the closing ceremony was ultimately not held. Meanwhile, the Chinese government has denied rumors of discord, stating that friendly relations with North Korea are being maintained.
On the 30th, Mao Ning, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, responded during a briefing to questions about China's participation in events related to the 'China-North Korea Year of Friendship' proclaimed this year to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties. He said, "China and Joseon (North Korea) are friendly close neighbors who have consistently maintained traditional friendly and cooperative relations," adding, "We intend to safeguard, consolidate, and develop China-North Korea relations well, in accordance with the important common understanding achieved by the leaders of both countries."
Earlier, North Korea and China declared this year, marking the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations, as the 'Year of China-North Korea Friendship,' and held an opening ceremony in Pyongyang last April. China dispatched Zhao Leji, the third-ranking official and Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress, to the opening ceremony. Chairman Zhao met with Kim Jong Un, Chairman of the State Affairs Commission of North Korea, demonstrating their friendship.

According to precedent, the closing ceremony for the China-North Korea Year of Friendship was expected to be held in Beijing later this year, with a delegation led by Choe Ryong Hae, Chairman of the Standing Committee of the Supreme People's Assembly of North Korea, visiting China. However, as the year is nearly over, the event has yet to take place.
