As a result, 'The Hyundai Gwangju' is expected to begin construction in the first half of next year after obtaining building permits and other necessary approvals.
On the 30th, Gwangju City held the 3rd Architecture and Landscape Joint Committee meeting in the city hall's main conference room, where it conditionally approved the plan for 'The Hyundai Gwangju' complex shopping mall, which is to be built on the former Jeonbang and Ilsinbangjik site.
During the review, the committee focused not only on the architectural and landscape plans but also on the connection of pedestrian pathways around the site, the creation of unique interior and exterior spaces specific to the complex shopping mall, and the enhancement of pedestrian connectivity between Gwangjucheon and the mall.
With the conditional approval from the committee, 'The Hyundai Gwangju' can now fully proceed with the building permit process. If it passes the building permit review by the local district (Buk-gu) in the first half of next year, construction will begin immediately. The target opening year is 2028.
'The Hyundai Gwangju' will be the largest complex shopping mall in the country, featuring shopping, cultural, and leisure facilities on a site of 32,364 square meters, with a height of 60 meters, a length of 201 meters, a width of 116 meters, and a total floor area of 274,079 square meters spanning from six basement levels to eight above-ground floors.
The basic architectural design was undertaken by Herzog & de Meuron, the world-renowned Swiss architectural firm and recipient of the Pritzker Prize, often referred to as the "Nobel Prize of Architecture," through an international design competition. The design of 'The Hyundai Gwangju' aims to create enduring values that reflect the traditions of the past, the dynamism of the present, and the possibilities of the future.
Kim Junyoung, Director of Urban Space, stated, "'The Hyundai Gwangju' will be the first among the three complex shopping malls set to transform Gwangju into a vibrant city to break ground," adding, "We will actively support its development so it can become a signature space that enhances the city's brand value and competitiveness and establishes itself as a major tourist attraction."
