View original imageDaejeon Mayor Lee Jangwoo stated on the 30th regarding the Muan tragedy, "We will take all necessary measures to extend and expand the runway at Cheongju International Airport, which is frequently used by Daejeon citizens."
Before presiding over the weekly work meeting that morning, Mayor Lee, along with attending public officials, observed a moment of silence for the victims. He said, "We will promptly establish a joint memorial altar for citizens and identify areas where cooperation and support with the province are needed, so that we can do our utmost to assist in the aftermath of the accident."
He continued, "Although recent national confusion coupled with such tragic news has made citizens uneasy, it is in times like these that public officials must remain steadfast, ensuring that citizens can continue their daily lives and economic activities, and calmly and resolutely protect their lives and property."
He further emphasized the importance of extending and expanding the runway at Cheongju International Airport, noting that awareness about runway length has increased following this accident.
Mayor Lee said, "Through this incident, the issues of further extending the runway and adding an additional runway at Cheongju International Airport, which is most frequently used by Daejeon citizens and Chungcheong residents, have become extremely important matters. We will actively consult with North Chungcheong Province and make proposals to the government, taking all necessary measures in line with the expanding direct international routes at Cheongju Airport."
Mayor Lee also called for the Citizens Safety Office to maintain an even more thorough response system for disasters and accidents, and to establish response manuals that can be implemented without hesitation even in unexpected incidents.
Meanwhile, Daejeon City set up a joint memorial altar for citizens to express condolences and mourning for the victims in the lobby on the first floor of City Hall on this day.
