Suncheon Cancels Year-End and New Year Sunrise Events
Safety Personnel Deployed to Handle Crowds at Green Island
Suncheon City (Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu) announced that the scheduled sunset event at Waon Dock on December 31, 2024, and the sunrise event at Dongcheon Green Island on January 1, 2025, have been canceled as of the 29th, in a gesture of mourning following the Jeju Air passenger plane accident.
Although the sunrise event has been canceled, the city plans to thoroughly prepare for on-site order and safety management, such as deploying safety personnel, as crowds of sunrise visitors may still gather at Green Island in the early morning of January 1.
Suncheon Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu stated, "I extend my deepest condolences to the victims of the aircraft accident and their families, and we will do our utmost to cooperate in the accident response as well as to ensure that local residents can greet the new year in safety and peace."
Meanwhile, the city will set up a joint memorial altar at Suncheon City Hall from 9 a.m. on the 30th, which will be operated until January 4, 2025.
