Jinhae National Sports Center Swimming Pool, "Operating Normally from January 1"
Completion of Environmental Improvement Work Including Special Disinfection and Filter Replacement
Changwon Facilities Corporation in Gyeongnam announced that the Jinhae National Sports Center swimming pool, which had been temporarily closed since the 19th, has completed extensive disinfection and facility and environmental improvement work, and will resume normal operations from the 1st of next month.
The unidentified organism found in the swimming pool was confirmed to be midge larvae after testing by the National Institute of Biological Resources.
The corporation conducted a joint investigation with external specialized institutions, including the Swimming Pool Water Quality Management Council, K-water, and Changwon Water Quality Research Center, and concluded that the cause of the larvae outbreak was likely the entry of adult midges through the ceiling during elevator replacement work one month ago.
Accordingly, the corporation has incorporated preventive action procedures against adult midge intrusion during swimming pool-related construction into the manual and extended the special management period for the swimming pool from the original September-October to September-December.
Furthermore, water quality tests confirmed no abnormalities in the city water supply to the swimming pool.
Starting from the 20th, the center completed facility and environmental improvement work including cleaning and drying the swimming pool depth control panels, special disinfection of the pool interior and exterior as well as the machine room, replacement of filter media in the water purification equipment, additional installation of fine insect screens and air curtains at entrances, and installation of insect traps in the male and female changing rooms and powder rooms.
On the 27th, the corporation held a Swimming Pool Water Quality Management Council meeting composed of eight members including water quality experts, related organizations, civic groups, and relevant officials, and conducted an on-site inspection of the entire facilities including the pool interior and exterior and machine room, finding no abnormalities.
The Jinhae National Sports Center began filling the pool water on the same day, followed by trial operation of water treatment equipment, disinfection, and water quality testing, and plans to reopen the pool from the 1st.
