Goseong-gun, Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province (Governor Ham Myeong-jun) announced on the 26th that it has been finally selected for the ‘2025 New Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project’ contest hosted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy (Korea Energy Agency) as part of the government’s 2050 carbon-neutral energy transition policy, achieving the distinction of being selected for eight consecutive years since 2017.

Goseong-gun formed a consortium with specialized companies and was recognized for the feasibility of the project through public and on-site evaluations conducted by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy. In particular, this result is evaluated as a consequence of appealing the necessity of the project to realize energy welfare for Goseong residents, acknowledging the reality of intensified competition among local governments nationwide due to the reduction of national subsidy amounts.
With this contest selection, Goseong-gun plans to invest a total project cost of 3.2 billion KRW, including national and provincial subsidies, and start the project from March 2025.
Through this project, Goseong-gun plans to install solar power at 241 sites, solar thermal energy at 3 sites, and geothermal energy at 33 sites across 277 locations including detached houses and buildings, expecting to achieve an annual energy cost reduction effect of approximately 250 million KRW.
Over the past eight years, Goseong-gun has supported 18.1 billion KRW to local residents through the New Renewable Energy Convergence Support Project, installing new renewable energy facilities at 2,268 locations. Additionally, as a result of expanding renewable energy acceptance among residents through strengthened communication, it has greatly contributed to creating an energy self-reliant city by achieving a power self-sufficiency rate of 42.7%.
