KIOST Publishes ‘Black Tides Geomeun Jaeang’... Research Records After Oil Spill Accidents
A Professional Book Documenting the Aftermath of the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill Incident
The Korea Institute of Ocean Science and Technology (KIOST, President Lee Hee-seung) has published a professional book titled ‘Black Tides: The Black Disaster,’ which records research conducted after the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident.
This book contains the research achievements of KIOST researchers who, over 12 years until 2019, have long-term monitored the environmental impact of oil pollution at the accident site and worked on developing marine environmental restoration technologies related to the Hebei Spirit oil spill accident that occurred in 2007 near the coast of Taean-gun, Chungnam Province.
Published under the subtitle ‘Remembering the Hebei Spirit Oil Spill Accident,’ the book is divided into three parts: Part 1 contains factual explanatory materials, Part 2 summarizes key research results from field investigations, and Part 3 includes guidelines.
What makes this book especially significant is that, both domestically and internationally, there are very few professional books on oil spills, and this book contains the experience and expertise of our research team.
KIOST Namhae Research Institute’s Lim Un-hyeok and Shim Won-jun, principal researchers who contributed as authors to this book, have long studied marine environmental pollution, including oil pollution.
Additionally, this book is expected to be used as a reference for students majoring in oceanography and environmental science, and it is available for purchase at both online and offline bookstores.
