Dangjin City Installs 20 Flags on Myeoncheon Eupseong Fortress Walls
Reviving the Majesty of Myeoncheon Eupseong Through Fluttering Flags
Dangjin City in Chungnam has completed the installation of flags on the southern wall of Myeoncheon Eupseong, a Chungnam Provincial Monument.
Myeoncheon Eupseong in Dangjin is a walled town built in the 21st year of King Sejong's reign (1439) for administrative purposes to realize the ideals of Confucian governance and to defend against Japanese pirates during the late Goryeo and early Joseon periods.
This flag installation project at Myeoncheon Eupseong was carried out to enhance its identity as a defensive fortress and military camp, and to restore the grandeur of Myeoncheon Eupseong.
A total of 20 flags were installed, with five Daeobanggi and five Yeonggi on each side of the southern gate.
The Daeobanggi, consisting of Cheongryonggi, Baekhogi, Jujakgi, Hyeonmugi, and Deungsagi, were large military flags representing directions in the barracks and were used to command each military unit.
The Yeonggi (令) were flags used to deliver orders from commanders and had to be carried when receiving commands.
The city plans to install flags not only on the newly completed southern wall but also on the restored western wall, southwestern bastion, and southeastern bastion in the future. In addition, separate information boards explaining the flags will be produced to provide visitors with a variety of information about Myeoncheon Eupseong.
Dangjin City is currently promoting the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism's Chungcheong Confucian Cultural Area Wide Tourism Development Project (Yeomindongnak History Nuri Project), which embodies the spirit of caring for the people by former Myeoncheon County Governor Park Ji-won, to develop Myeoncheon Eupseong as a tourism resource. The city has also restored Jangcheong (the officers' quarters) to showcase its military symbolism.
Lee Jongwoo, head of the Culture and Sports Division, said, "With the installation of flags on the fortress wall, a new aspect of Myeoncheon Eupseong has been revealed," and added, "We will continue to do our best to provide visitors with a rich array of attractions at Myeoncheon Eupseong by linking cultural heritage."
