Ministry of Science and ICT Grants Samsung Electronics' 'Bespoke AI Steam' Top-Level IoT Security Certification
First Case of Standard Type IoT Security Certification
Samsung Electronics' all-in-one robot vacuum cleaner with a mop function, 'Bespoke AI Steam,' has become the first to receive the highest level (Standard) IoT security certification issued by the Ministry of Science and ICT.
On the 17th, the Ministry of Science and ICT and the Korea Internet & Security Agency (KISA) awarded the certification to Samsung Electronics at the National Science and Technology Advisory Council's main conference room in Jongno-gu, Seoul, recognizing the Bespoke AI Steam for achieving the highest level of IoT security certification.
The IoT security certification system was introduced in response to incidents of hacking of Internet of Things products. The Standard type IoT security certification is granted to products equipped with the highest level of security measures capable of countering advanced hacking attacks. Samsung Electronics' robot vacuum cleaner, 'Bespoke AI Steam,' passed all 43 evaluation criteria for the Standard type certification and received the certificate. This is the first case of Standard type certification in South Korea.
The Bespoke AI Steam protects all data, including captured images and videos, using end-to-end encryption (E2EE) technology, ensuring that only authorized users can access them. E2EE is a technology that transmits shared data between devices encrypted even on the server. Additionally, Samsung’s proprietary security platform 'Knox' technology is applied to protect the device from data alteration caused by malicious code and unauthorized access attempts. Knox is a multi-layered security platform that protects user data from external threats, including malicious software. Currently, all Samsung Electronics smart home appliances are protected by Knox. Samsung Electronics has applied Knox since smart home appliances released in 2018. Furthermore, the Bespoke AI Steam does not store streaming videos in the cloud, and recorded videos are kept in the cloud for only 24 hours before being deleted.
With this, Samsung Electronics has once again enhanced the reliability of its AI home appliances by receiving security verification from an accredited institution. Previously, the company’s 'Bespoke AI Family Hub' received the highest grade, 'Diamond,' in the IoT security evaluation by the global certification body UL Solutions, becoming the first in the global home appliance industry to do so. UL Solutions’ IoT security evaluation involves rigorous testing of hacking risks and security levels of smart home appliances, assigning five levels of certification. The Diamond grade requires passing stringent evaluations, including detection of malicious software tampering, prevention of unauthorized access attempts, and anonymization of user data, among other lower-level security criteria. Since then, Samsung Electronics has obtained the same grade for a total of five products, including the 'Bespoke AI Combo' and Bespoke AI Steam. As of August, Samsung Electronics holds the most certifications of this grade in the industry. Samsung Electronics plans to continue expanding security certifications from external accredited institutions, including UL Solutions.
Samsung Electronics also operates an internal simulated hacking project at least once per quarter to inspect the security of AI home appliances. In-house software developers frequently conduct simulated hacking on products and services to identify vulnerabilities and perform security software updates, thereby strengthening defenses against external intrusions.
