Jeon Kyung-hoon, President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Samsung Electronics’ DX Division and Head of Samsung Research, announced on the 17th that he has been selected as a 2025 Fellow of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the most prestigious organization in the world.
IEEE is the largest and most authoritative society in the fields of electrical, electronics, computer, and communications engineering. It has over 460,000 members across more than 190 countries and is currently managing over 2,250 standard projects.

View original imageSamsung Electronics made its mark by producing five 'IEEE Fellows,' including Jeon Kyung-hoon, who are recognized as the top experts in the electrical and electronics engineering fields. The 'IEEE Fellow' is the highest technical grade awarded to the top 0.1% of IEEE members. IEEE selects Fellows annually by evaluating members with over 10 years of experience in electrical and electronics engineering, based on their research and development achievements, contributions to industry, and societal advancement.
Jeon Kyung-hoon was appointed Fellow in recognition of his contributions to the development of 5G wireless communication and virtualized radio access network (vRAN) technologies. Since joining Samsung Electronics in 2012 and serving as head of the Network Business Division, Jeon has led the development of core 5G technologies and commercial solutions. He played a key role in the world’s first successful commercialization of 5G mobile communication, contributing to Samsung’s global network business. Currently, he oversees advanced technology research and development as CTO of Samsung Electronics’ DX Division.

Kim Yoon-sun, a Master at Samsung Research who contributed to 5G mobile communication standardization, was also named an IEEE Fellow. Over the past seven years, Kim has served as both chair and vice-chair of the 3GPP RAN WG1 (Radio Access Network Physical Layer Technology Working Group) and was recognized for achievements in 5G physical layer standardization. Building on 5G standardization success, Kim is currently preparing for the full-scale standardization of 6G RAN starting next year.
Samsung Electronics also produced two Fellows recognized for their achievements in the field of artificial intelligence (AI).
Timothy Hospedales, Head of the Samsung Research Europe AI Center, was appointed Fellow for his accomplishments in AI machine learning and meta-learning. Hospedales joined Samsung Electronics in 2019 and is an expert in machine learning and data intelligence. He currently leads AI research and development for the Europe region at the Cambridge AI Center in the UK.
Michael Brown, Head of the Samsung Research Toronto AI Center, was also selected as a Fellow. He was recognized for his significant contributions to camera image processing and image quality enhancement in the AI vision field. Brown joined Samsung Electronics in 2019 and is an expert in computer vision, currently overseeing research and development at the Toronto AI Center in Canada.
