Jungmun CC Signature Hall Vomiting Risk When Severe
Exotic Scenery Popularity Dampens 'K-Tourism' Status
Corroded Deodorizing Tower Only Temporarily Fixed with Clothesline, 'Extremely Dangerous'
Facility Management in Charge, Jeju-do Renovation Work Delayed Indefinitely
Jeju Island Jungmun Golf Course's 4th hole on the coastal course is known as the most popular course due to its exotic scenery, but the sewage odor from Saekdal Sewage Treatment Plant located below the course is causing visitors to frown. In particular, the sewage-related structure next to the sidewalk is highly corroded and at risk of toppling, yet it has been left unattended, secured only with clotheslines. This not only threatens the safety of nearby pedestrians and tourists but also tarnishes the reputation of K-tourism.
According to Jeju Province and the Jungmun Tourist Complex on the 9th, the Jungmun Tourist Complex, a world-renowned tourist destination that attracts both domestic and international visitors every year, has been managed and operated by the Korea Tourism Organization since its development stage.
Sewage management within the complex is divided among departments and is overseen by the Jeju Water and Sewage Headquarters. The Jungmun Complex, which runs along the Seogwipo coast, is known for its outstanding scenery and is considered the top spot in Jeju tourism. However, despite its beautiful landscape, complaints from tourists have been increasing recently due to worsening foul odors.
Moreover, the Jungmun Golf Course, which is very popular among tourists, is known as an affordable golf course in Jeju where players can enjoy exotic scenery. It is also famous as a "photo spot" and is a golf course many want to visit at least once.
However, when entering the signature coastal holes 3 to 5 of the Jungmun Golf Course, golfers frown due to the severe foul odor.
A golf course assistant said, "This year, the smell is worse than last year," adding, "There is the Saekdal Sewage Treatment Plant below the golf course, and the odor worsens during low-pressure weather or heatwaves, sometimes to the point of causing nausea."
A representative from a company that manufactures odor reduction devices explained, "If any type of odor reduction machine is functioning properly, the odor should not be that severe. However, if filters or chemicals are not replaced regularly, the accumulated high-concentration sewage odor is released directly without filtration, which can worsen the smell."
The lower part of the deodorizing tower that removes sewage odor next to the sidewalk at the Jungmun Tourist Complex bus stop is corroded, but it has been left unattended, secured with a clothesline to prevent collapse, posing a safety threat to residents and tourists.
View original imageThe bigger problem is the two-story deodorization tower installed at the bus stop intersection in the Jungmun Tourist Complex. The lower part of this tower is corroded and on the verge of collapse, yet it is only secured on both sides with clotheslines. This sloppy management threatens the safety of passersby and tourists nearby and is tarnishing the reputation of this world-class tourist destination.
Jeju is a region prone to severe strong winds, as evidenced by over 500 Chinese fishing vessels seeking shelter off Seogwipo on the 17th of last month and a maritime space launch barge running aground on the 27th. Therefore, urgent repair work is needed for the deodorization tower installed next to the sidewalk.
Despite this dangerous situation, the relevant authorities have been postponing the repair work. The Jeju branch of the Korea Tourism Organization reportedly assessed the situation and forwarded it to Jeju Province after continuous complaints.
In response, a Jeju official stated, "We planned to install additional odor reduction devices at the Saekdal Sewage Treatment Plant this year, but installation has been delayed due to issues with the selected contractor, and we have currently requested procurement through the Public Procurement Service."
