In particular, with the National Assembly scheduled to hold a plenary session in the afternoon to vote on the impeachment motion against President Yoon, all eyes are on whether his address can soothe the angry public sentiment and minimize defections from the ruling party.
The Blue House announced, "President Yoon will deliver a live nationwide address at 10 a.m. today."
A Blue House official told Asia Economy in a phone interview, "There will be a nationwide address by President Yoon at 10 a.m. today," adding, "It is a situation where it cannot be avoided before the National Assembly's impeachment vote."
In this address, President Yoon is expected to directly express his position on the martial law situation and include an apology to the public. However, it has not yet been confirmed whether he will address issues such as constitutional amendments for term reduction.
It is known that President Yoon decided to make the address after accepting the ruling party's request to express his position, including a public apology, before the impeachment vote. On the previous day, President Yoon met consecutively with Han Dong-hoon, leader of the People Power Party, and Choo Kyung-ho, floor leader, gathering opinions including demands for an apology from the ruling party, and reportedly responded, "I understand well. I will consider it."
Since the announcement of martial law on the night of the 3rd and the lifting of martial law in the early morning of the 4th, President Yoon had not issued any additional statements until the previous day. On the 4th, the Blue House only stated in an interview with major foreign media that "the declaration of martial law was made within the bounds of the Constitution."
