Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation (President Kim Nam-il) introduces six hidden tourist spots under the theme "Gyeongbuk, where winter nights are more beautiful" to welcome the winter season. The selected locations are lesser-known tourist destinations where visitors can experience the special charm of winter nights.
Bonghwa Yeolmokeo Village near Baekcheon Valley in Seokpo-myeon, Bonghwa-gun, is a unique tourist site created by repurposing a closed school. The serene scenery of the snow-covered valley and village at night offers visitors a special experience. Here, visitors can observe the ecology of Yeolmokeo, Natural Monument No. 74, through the Yeolmokeo Ecology Experience Center, and in winter, enjoy ice fishing for smelt on the frozen surface. On clear days, visitors can admire the pouring stars, fully experiencing the charm of winter nights.
Sangju’s intriguingly named tourist spot, Geokkuro Iyagi Nara Forest, located at the foot of Sogrisan Mountain, offers unique experiences as distinctive as its name. The upside-down house and sculptures stimulate visitors’ curiosity. The main attraction, the “Upside-Down House,” features all furniture and items attached to the ceiling, providing visitors with an unusual experience. The indoor experience space is ideal for enjoying with infants and toddlers during bad winter weather. Additionally, there are traditional Hanok experience facilities and natural walking trails, offering a variety of pleasures.
Ilwol Mountain (1,219m) in Yeongyang is famous for its winter snow scenery. Ilwol Mountain literally means “the mountain where the sun and moon rise and set,” and a sunrise event is held every January 1st, attracting many visitors. From the summit of Ilwol Mountain, visitors can take in breathtaking views of the East Sea and the Taebaek mountain range. Especially in winter, frost flowers and snow crystals bloom, creating a fantastic snowy landscape. The Ilwol Mountain Wildflower Park, located mid-mountain, offers a chance to see various rare plants, drawing nature lovers every year.
Yeongcheon Starlight Village is a beautiful mountain village located in Hwabuk-myeon, Yeongcheon City. This village is known for its harmonious blend of nature, rural scenery, culture, and art, having been selected as one of Korea’s top 100 must-visit tourist destinations. Juwolsa Temple & Moonlight Park in Uiseong is also a place with outstanding winter scenery. Juwolsa Temple, located in Sagok-myeon, Uiseong-gun, means “the temple where the moon stays.” Although the exact founding date is unclear, it is believed to have been established during the Unified Silla period. The temple’s main hall, Daeungjeon, was rebuilt several times and was last reconstructed in 1819 (the 19th year of King Sunjo’s reign). Inside the temple grounds stands a five-story stone pagoda supported by four Haetae (lion statues). At the entrance of Juwolsa, there is Moonlight Park, created in 2012. This park has minimal artificial lighting, making it ideal for night sky observation. Particularly, the crescent moon monument in the park features a poem titled “Crescent Moon” by Jang Hyo-sik, providing a poetic experience.
Pohang Dumasan Village is a pristine mountain village located at the foot of Myeonbong Mountain and Bohyeon Mountain. At the village entrance stands a monument inscribed with “The first village under the sky, the village that touches the stars,” boasting clean air and beautiful natural surroundings. The village operates around the Mountain Village Culture Center, established on the site of the closed Dumacho Elementary School Jukjang Branch. Through the “Living in the Countryside Program” by the Return-to-Farming and Return-to-Village Support Center, urban residents are given opportunities to experience rural life. The village offers various seasonal programs such as the Gorosoe Festival, wildflower and mountain herb exploration, wild vegetable festival, and stargazing experiences. It is also a popular destination for 2,000 to 3,000 hikers annually. Myeonbong Mountain is favored by wildflower enthusiasts because rare wildflowers bloom seasonally and the hiking trails are not too strenuous.
Kim Nam-il, President of Gyeongbuk Culture and Tourism Corporation, said, "The places introduced this time are lesser-known remote tourist spots that hold the special charm of winter nights," adding, "They will be new travel destinations for those who want to escape the bustle of the city and enjoy the tranquility and beauty of winter nights."
