Jinju City Wins 'Presidential Award' at This Year's Korea City Awards
Achieved Overall 1st Place in Evaluation of Local Governments Nationwide
Recognized Once Again as the 'Best City in the Nation'
Jinju City in Gyeongnam announced on the 2nd that it has been honored with the ‘Presidential Award’ by achieving first place overall in the evaluation of 229 local governments nationwide (including administrative cities) in the ‘2024 Korea City Awards,’ hosted by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, which assesses urban sustainability and the level of living infrastructure.
The Korea City Awards is the most prestigious award given annually by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport to local governments nationwide based on the 「National Land Planning and Utilization Act」. It evaluates efforts to improve urban spaces and citizens’ quality of life and to enhance urban competitiveness, awarding local governments that have achieved outstanding results.
Jinju City has achieved its best results over many years, continuing from the 7th to the 8th term of the elected mayor. Following the Minister’s Award in 2020, the Prime Minister’s Award in 2021, the Presidential Award in 2022, the Minister’s Award in 2023, Jinju received the Presidential Award again in 2024, marking a remarkable achievement of winning awards for five consecutive years. The five-year consecutive award and the biennial receipt of the Presidential Award by a small to medium-sized city is an extremely rare case, giving it even more special significance.
The City Awards selects outstanding local governments through a comprehensive evaluation of 11 items across four categories (urban society, urban economy, urban environment, and support system) by an evaluation committee composed of experts in each field.
The first stage of document evaluation assesses the four categories including urban society by dividing them into basic indicators and policy indicators through a written review. The second stage of on-site evaluation selects two to three times the number of potential award-winning cities based on the first stage document evaluation, and the evaluation is conducted with the participation of judges on-site. Subsequently, the city’s sustainability and level of living infrastructure are comprehensively reviewed, and the final award-winning cities are decided through the evaluation committee’s deliberation.
Mayor Cho Gyu-il said, “Winning the award for five consecutive years, including this year’s Presidential Award, is the result of all citizens’ best efforts toward the city administration goal of ‘Prosperous Jinju, Happy Citizens.’ We will continue to do our best to be recognized as a city where everyone wants to live and as Korea’s top premium city by promoting sound urban policies.”
