Goyang City Selects Winning Design for Daehwa Library Green Remodeling Competition
Reflecting the Characteristics of a Conversation Library Harmonized with the Forest
Target Completion Year 2025
Goyang Special City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Lee Dong-hwan) announced on the 29th that it has selected the work of Won Architects Co., Ltd. as the winning design for the Daehwa Library Green Remodeling Project, which meets the goals of improving the aging library and enhancing energy efficiency.
The Daehwa Library Green Remodeling Project is a project to remodel the entire exterior wall of the aging Goyang City Daehwa Library, which has one basement floor and four above-ground floors with a total floor area of 3,901㎡, with a total investment of 3.4 billion KRW, including 2.7 billion KRW from national and provincial funds.
Considering that most of the exterior walls of Daehwa Library consist of windows and to select a work suitable for green remodeling, the city selected capable and fair judges through the design competition steering committee and proceeded with the evaluation.
At the design competition committee’s review on the 25th, the committee listened to the designers’ proposal presentations and held a Q&A session. Through voting, among four works, the work of Director Yoo Jung-hoon of Won Architects Co., Ltd. was unanimously selected as the final winner.
Won Architects proposed a public library that enhances energy efficiency by harmonizing with the Seongjeo Park forest, considering the unique characteristics of Daehwa Library based on a thorough understanding of green remodeling.
In particular, the adjustment of the large windows, including the existing curtain wall of Daehwa Library, without compromising illumination, and the installation of light filters on the exterior to filter natural light entering the interior attracted attention. Proposals for a windbreak room and outdoor spaces also received high praise from the judges.

A library official said, “We will promote the project by reflecting the characteristics of Daehwa Library harmonized with the forest well from the design stage, aiming for completion in 2025.”
