Installation of 16 Barriers at Mangwon Yusuji Sports Park in Mapo-gu
Installation of Safety Barriers, Audio Announcement Systems, and CCTV at 13 Mangwon Retention Ponds
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, States "We Will Do Our Best to Prevent Disasters with the Belief That Excessive Safety Measures Are Better"
Mapo-gu (Mayor Park Gang-su) has installed an entrance control system to prevent flooding accidents at Mangwon Retention Basin (450-3 Mangwon-dong).
This is to enhance the safety of residents using the Mangwon Retention Basin Sports Park amid the recent surge in heavy rainfall due to climate change.
The Mangwon Retention Basin was established in 1973 in connection with the rainwater drainage pumping station to prevent flooding damage in the low-lying areas of Mapo-gu, covering an area of 54,409.9㎡ with a storage capacity of 160,900㎡.
Although originally created to store rainwater, it is usually used as a sports space by residents of various age groups, making entrance control and evacuation broadcasts essential during water retention.
Until now, uniform guidance broadcasts were conducted each time water was retained, and staff rushed to the site to install safety belts at the entrances, but since the perimeter is about 1 km, it was insufficient to respond immediately to localized heavy rain.
Accordingly, Mapo-gu installed 16 safety barriers at 13 entrances of the Mangwon Retention Basin Sports Park and 11 sound devices that broadcast warning and evacuation announcements.
Additionally, 12 closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs) were installed to continuously monitor the area around the retention basin from the rainwater pumping station and to operate the safety barriers as needed.
With this construction, Mapo-gu expects to subdivide disaster risk areas and respond quickly in emergencies.
Park Gang-su, Mayor of Mapo-gu, said, “We are actively installing and managing flood prevention facilities to protect residents from heavy rain, monsoons, and typhoons caused by abnormal weather,” adding, “With the belief that ‘excessive safety measures are better,’ we will identify and eliminate risk factors in advance to make Mapo safe 365 days a year.”
