View original imagePresident Yoon Suk-yeol, who is visiting Lima, Peru to attend the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Summit, held a summit meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the 15th (local time) to discuss ways to enhance practical cooperation, including security and defense cooperation as well as economic cooperation. They also condemned the illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and shared updates on the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia.
First, President Yoon said, "I welcome the successful launch of the 'Diplomacy and Defense (2+2) Ministerial Meeting' held in Ottawa, Canada on the 1st," adding, "I hope that the launch of the 2+2 meeting will serve as an opportunity to further expand comprehensive security cooperation, including mutually beneficial defense cooperation between the two countries."
Prime Minister Trudeau stated, "The launch of this 2+2 meeting was a valuable occasion that demonstrated that cooperation between our two countries has taken a step forward," and added, "Let us deepen related cooperation as trusted strategic partners."
President Yoon expressed gratitude for Canada’s contributions to peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula through its dispatch of a deputy commander to the United Nations Command and implementation of sanctions against North Korea, and mentioned, "I look forward to continued cooperation for peace and stability in the region."
Prime Minister Trudeau emphasized, "Canada aims to play a more central role as a key security partner in the Indo-Pacific region," and said, "We hope to seek deeper cooperation with Korea in bilateral and multilateral dimensions going forward."
President Yoon noted, "Next year marks the 10th anniversary of the Korea-Canada Free Trade Agreement (FTA)," and said, "Let us further deepen economic cooperation between our two countries, which are optimal economic security partners."
Prime Minister Trudeau mentioned that Canadian LNG will be introduced to Korea for the first time next year through the 'Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Canada Project,' and called for joint efforts to build a stable regional energy supply chain and pursue various energy cooperation. He also added that it is necessary to strengthen cooperation in the fields of artificial intelligence (AI), cyber, and clean energy.

The two leaders condemned the illegal military cooperation between Russia and North Korea and shared updates on the deployment of North Korean troops to Russia. They agreed to cooperate for unified responses and external messaging in the future. Furthermore, as their countries will respectively hold the chairmanships of APEC and the Group of Seven (G7) next year, they agreed to cooperate to create synergy through mutual collaboration.
