Minister Yoo Sang-im of the Ministry of Science and ICT will meet with the representatives of the three major mobile carriers for the first time since taking office to discuss telecommunications issues such as alleviating the burden of communication fees and eradicating illegal spam.
According to the Ministry of Science and ICT on the 13th, Minister Yoo held a meeting with the representatives of the three major mobile carriers?Yoo Young-sang, CEO of SK Telecom; Kim Young-seop, CEO of KT; and Hwang Hyun-sik, CEO of LG Uplus?at the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Industry in Jung-gu, Seoul.
In his opening remarks, Minister Yoo identified the challenges facing the telecommunications industry as alleviating the burden of communication fees on the public, promoting competition in the telecommunications market, eradicating illegal acts such as illegal spam, supporting small and medium-sized businesses, and investing in future growth engines such as artificial intelligence (AI).
He emphasized the need to create a more convenient and secure telecommunications usage environment by addressing inconveniences and areas for improvement from the users’ perspective.
Minister Yoo also stated that the market ecosystem must be nurtured so that the public can enjoy reasonable fees.
During the meeting, Minister Yoo mentioned that issues raised during this year’s National Assembly audit, such as the LTE fee inversion problem and the selective discount issue, should be addressed by devising measures that enhance consumer benefits. He added that cooperation is needed to strengthen the competitiveness of MVNOs so that they can grow as competitive players under the oligopoly of the three major carriers.
Additionally, he requested that telecommunications companies take measures to eradicate illegal spam and prioritize assigning new or long-unused numbers to children under the age of 12 to minimize their exposure to illegal spam. Furthermore, he shared the aspiration for the government and the private sector to unite as one team to advance Korea as an AI G3 (the three major countries) nation and urged collective efforts to ensure that Korea takes the lead in the 6G era.
