Paju-si Transforms 3rd Tunnel and Dora Observatory into Barrier-Free Tourist Sites
Two Sites Selected in 2025 Open Tourism Destination Contest... Securing 500 Million KRW in National Funding
Paju City, Gyeonggi Province (Mayor Kim Kyung-il) announced on the 4th that two tourist sites were selected in the ‘2025 Open Tourism Site Contest’ hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, securing 500 million KRW in national funding. The city plans to invest a total of 1.1 billion KRW in the ‘Open Tourism Site Development Project’ by adding 600 million KRW of city funds to the secured national budget.
The Open Tourism Site Development Project aims to create tourist sites that are free from mobility inconveniences and activity restrictions for all visitors, including people with disabilities, the elderly, families with infants and young children, and pregnant women.
Among 86 tourist sites from 35 local governments nationwide that applied for the contest, Paju City actively explained the necessity of national funding support during the document screening and on-site evaluation processes. As a result, two representative DMZ tourist sites in Paju, the Third Tunnel and Dora Observatory, were selected as open tourism sites.
Paju City plans to develop the selected tourist sites into barrier-free tourism sites. To this end, the city will proceed with replacing the monorail at the Third Tunnel and installing a barrier-free observation wheel at Dora Observatory, based on tailored on-site consultations with people with disabilities and experts.
