Dismembered Body Found in Hwacheon Bukhan River... Police Launch Investigation
On the 3rd, 7 to 8 additional bodies found in plastic bags
A part of a body was found in the Bukhan River in Hwacheon-gun, Gangwon Province, prompting the police to launch a search.
According to Yonhap News Agency, on the 2nd at around 2:46 p.m., a resident discovered a part of a body, presumed to be a leg, floating on the surface of the Bukhan River in front of Hwacheon Gymnasium in Hwacheon-eup and reported it to the Hwacheon Police Station.
The police recovered the body part for forensic examination and conducted a search of the Bukhan River and its surroundings for the second day. The police are investigating various possibilities, including whether the body part is from a corpse washed down from the North or an attempt to conceal a crime.
To check if there are more body parts, the police deployed divers to search underwater on the 2nd. However, as night fell and the search became difficult, the police temporarily suspended the search and resumed it around 9 a.m. the following day.
When the search resumed on the 3rd, the police reportedly found additional remains, including parts of the lower body, near the Bong-eo Island dock about 600 meters away at around 10:30 a.m. They discovered 7 to 8 bodies, including torsos, arms, and legs, wrapped in plastic bags.
The police are focusing on identifying the victims and intensifying their efforts to find the remaining missing body parts.
Meanwhile, in Hwacheon-gun, which is geographically close to North Korea, bodies washed down from the North have been occasionally found. In 2022, near the Peace Dam dock in Dongchon-ri, Hwacheon-eup, the body of a boy about 10 years old, approximately 120 cm tall and severely decomposed, was discovered.
The police estimated that the body had drifted from North Korea after an accident, considering the clothing and the absence of recent missing child reports. In 2008, a body presumed to be a North Korean soldier was found upstream of the Bukhan River in Pungsan-ri, Hwacheon-eup, in the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ).
