Police Secure Significant Data Related to Fetal Survival in '36-Week Abortion Case'
"Fetus Left Without Medical Intervention After Birth"
The police announced that they have secured significant evidence indicating that the fetus was alive before and after the abortion surgery in the case of the '36-week fetus abortion.'
On the 31st, a representative from the Criminal Mobile Unit of the Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency stated, "We confirmed that the fetus was healthy without any abnormal findings at two initial hospitals visited several days before the abortion surgery performed by the YouTuber. Through seized items and testimonies from related parties, we also secured meaningful evidence that the fetus was alive before and after birth." They explained that they received a significant response regarding the fetus's viability through medical consultation as well.
The police believe that murder charges can be applied to Hospital Director Yoon and Surgeon Shim, who participated in the surgery. The medical staff involved in the surgery neglected to perform necessary medical procedures immediately after the fetus was born, and ultimately, the delivered fetus died. When a newborn is delivered, necessary measures to maintain body temperature and respiration must be taken, and the newborn’s health status should be assessed using the Apgar score. Although the chart records this score, it is reported that the medical staff testified that no particular medical actions were taken after birth.
A police official said, "(Regarding the charges) the medical staff’s testimonies are sometimes inconsistent, but overall, it is consistent that no medical treatment was provided after the child was born," adding, "We confirmed that the Apgar score is recorded in the medical records, but we cannot consider the content to be truthful."
Yoon and Shim are accused of killing the fetus by performing an abortion surgery on YouTuber A, a woman in her 20s who sparked controversy by sharing her experience of aborting at 36 weeks of pregnancy. The police have registered a total of nine people as suspects and are investigating the case. YouTuber A has also been registered on murder charges, and four other medical staff members besides the hospital director and surgeon have been charged with aiding and abetting murder. Two brokers who referred patients face charges of violating medical law.
