The "Artificial Intelligence Academic Conference," which designs the present and future of AI technology and promotes global cooperation, was held in Gwangju.
On the afternoon of the 30th, Gwangju City announced on the 31st that it had opened the global AI academic conference "AICON Gwangju 2024" at the Oryong Hall of Gwangju Institute of Science and Technology (GIST). The conference will continue for three days until November 1.
Under the theme "The World's AI, Shining Here," this conference is hosted by Gwangju City, the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the National IT Industry Promotion Agency, and organized by the AI Industry Convergence Project Group. The city expects the conference to take a step closer to becoming "Gwangju, the AI representative city," where AI permeates daily life by expanding participation not only from companies, academia, and institutions but also from citizens.
The opening ceremony was attended by Mayor Kang Gi-jung, Song Sang-hoon, Director-General of the Ministry of Science and ICT, and Lee Jeong-seon, Superintendent of Gwangju Metropolitan Office of Education. Mayor Kang emphasized, "I hope that new topics and practical, innovative ideas about AI will be shared at 'AICON Gwangju,' where world-renowned scholars and experts gather in one place," adding, "Gwangju will stand tall as the city in South Korea that best utilizes AI, becoming 'everyone's AI representative city' where AI is embedded in local businesses and citizens' daily lives."
Special lectures by world-class AI experts were also held. Timothy Papandreou, CEO of Emerging Transport Advisors in the U.S., gave a keynote speech on "AI and the Future of Gwangju," and Professor Jeong Ji-hoon of Daegu Gyeongbuk Institute of Science and Technology delivered a keynote on "AI Paradigm Shift and AI Industry Convergence Ecosystem." Additionally, Christopher Days, Vice President of DHL Germany, gave a special lecture on "AI Innovation Proposals for Gwangju."
"AICON Gwangju 2024" shares international trends and future prospects such as "Hyper-scale AI," "AI Clusters," and "AI Semiconductors & On-Device" through lectures by over 30 experts from seven countries. On the final day, November 1, popular topics such as "AI Business," "AI Future Forum," and "AI Ethics" will also be covered.

Meanwhile, at the exhibition booths set up inside GIST Oryong Hall, visitors can experience AI products and services such as AI caricatures, unmanned store clerk robots, and AI perfume recommendations. At the citizen experience zone in front of Oryong Hall plaza, visitors can try moving AI paintings, AI tarot, and AI cooking robots.
