‘Tonghap Mokpo High School’ to Open in March 2028
'Lee Seol' Final Approval of Financial Investment Review by Jeonnam Office of Education
Concentration in Old Downtown Schools... Alleviating Inconvenience of Long-Distance Commuting
The Jeonnam Provincial Office of Education announced on the 29th that the relocation plan for the Integrated Mokpo High School (tentative name) within the Okam district of the Mokpo area has finally passed the '4th Regular Review of the Jeonnam Office of Education Local Education Finance Planning Deliberation Committee.' The review held in the Office of Education situation room was effectively the final hurdle, as the Ministry of Education’s Central Investment Review Committee’s review was omitted.
The Integrated Mokpo High School will be relocated with a total project cost of 64.4 billion KRW, accommodating 32 classes, and is scheduled to open in March 2028.
The relocation of Integrated Mokpo High School is a longstanding issue raised by the local community to address the decline in school-age population and to redistribute schools concentrated in the old downtown area to the new town, thereby alleviating the inconvenience of long-distance commuting and protecting students’ right to learn.
The Office of Education decided to integrate Mokpo High School and Mokpo Girls’ High School in the old downtown area and relocate them to the Okam district. Reflecting the community’s wishes, Mokpo City supported the integration and relocation of the two schools by providing a 33,000㎡ site on a free lease basis.
With the approval of this financial investment review, the Office of Education plans to proceed with the relocation by reflecting the design costs in next year’s main budget and obtaining consent for the relocation of Jeonnam provincial schools.
The Office of Education expects that the educational environment in the Okam district of Mokpo will greatly improve once this project is completed. After the relocation, the existing school sites of Mokpo High School and Mokpo Girls’ High School will be developed into complex educational and cultural facilities that can be used jointly by students and local residents and contribute to revitalizing the local economy, based on community feedback.
