'Patrolling While Taking a Walk'... Bucheon City Launches Companion Dog Patrol Unit
Bucheon City in Gyeonggi Province announced on the 29th that the "Companion Dog Patrol," which combines residents' participation in crime prevention activities with the daily walking routines of companion dogs and their owners, has officially begun its activities.
The Companion Dog Patrol is a voluntary service activity where companion dogs and their owners walk around the neighborhood, immediately report inconveniences, and take measures to prevent crimes and hazards upon discovery.
Reflecting the high interest of companion animal households in the era of 15 million pet owners in Korea, a total of 112 teams applied for this Companion Dog Patrol recruitment. Among them, after strict expert screening on responses to people and dogs, and aggression checks against external stimuli, 49 teams were finally selected.
About 70 people, including patrol members and their families, attended the launch ceremony held on the 26th. Attendees received appointment certificates along with activity uniforms for owners and companion dogs, patrol badges, and guidebooks for safe patrolling.
In particular, the Bucheon Wonmi Police Station provided training on patrol areas and methods suited to local characteristics for the Companion Dog Patrol members, completing preparations to prevent safety accidents before full-scale activities.
Jo Yong-ik, mayor of Bucheon, said, "The Companion Dog Patrol will be a good opportunity to improve awareness of companion animals through exemplary activities as well as ensuring local safety," adding, "I hope that citizens living with companion animals will continue to lead the creation of a new culture of coexistence with their pets."
