A Drunk 20-Year-Old Flees from Patrol Car and Causes a Collision...
Police Officer's Stop Order Ignored
Abandoning Vehicle and Fleeing
A man who fled from a patrol car trying to prevent drunk driving and even caused a minor collision was caught by the police.
On the 22nd, the Seoul Gwanak Police Station announced that they had arrested a man in his 20s, identified as Mr. A, on charges of violating the Road Traffic Act (drunk driving and failure to take action after an accident).
At around 6:02 a.m. on the 13th, the police responded to a report of suspected drunk driving near Sillim-dong, Gwanak-gu, Seoul, and conducted a sobriety check on Mr. A, who was walking on a two-lane road. At the time, Mr. A denied drunk driving, saying, "I was coming home after drinking at a nearby bar."
The police found it suspicious that Mr. A seemed aware of their presence and was not leaving the scene, so they made a wide circle around the area and returned to the scene, where they noticed a car slowly driving by.
The police ordered Mr. A to stop, but he fled through alleyways to avoid the patrol car, causing a collision with another vehicle in the process. Afterward, Mr. A abandoned his car and ran away from an alley about 2 km away from where he initially fled. The police chased him for about 120 meters and arrested him at a nearby convenience store.
Breathalyzer results confirmed that Mr. A's blood alcohol level was above the license cancellation threshold, but a preliminary drug test showed no drugs detected.
