The Safe Korea Drill is a nationwide comprehensive disaster response exercise involving government ministries, local governments, and related organizations to protect the lives and property of citizens from various large-scale disasters.
This year, electric vehicle fires, a recent hot topic, were selected as the main disaster focus. The drill will simulate a complex disaster scenario including an electric vehicle fire and crowd accident at the Magok LG Research Complex. A total of 23 organizations, including Gangseo-gu, Gangseo Fire Station, Gangseo Police Station, and LG Science Park, with more than 15,000 participants, will take part in this drill.
The number of electric vehicles registered in Gangseo-gu surged by 837%, from 432 in 2019 to 4,116 as of August this year, and the number of chargers also increased by 2,706%, from 128 to 3,592 during the same period.
Since residents' anxiety is high following electric vehicle fire incidents and large-scale damage is expected in case of such fires, efforts will focus on swift and thorough response capabilities.
The drill will be conducted in two parts: field training and discussion training. The field training will realistically demonstrate electric vehicle fire and suppression from the initial ignition point in the underground 2nd floor parking lot of Magok LG Science Park up to the ground floors.
A large-scale evacuation drill involving more than 15,000 workers at the LG Research Complex will also be conducted simultaneously. During the drill period, some sections will have traffic restrictions. The discussion training will be held at the district office’s Disaster Safety Situation Room, connecting the disaster site in real-time via YouTube and the video conferencing platform Zoom, thoroughly checking the response status of each task force.
